Wanna hear a band with some true soul both live and on record? Then get to know The Shakes from Athens, Alabama who will be opening for The Drive-By Truckers September 10th at Chattanooga’s Track 29! Jaw-dropping tunes that remind you of what music used to be… that’s the only way to describe it. We have chills!

And catch some killer live videos of what to expect in-person. This show will be AMAZING! Get To Know: The Dirty Lungs

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again, If you haven’t seen The Dirty Lungs live, GO DO SO! With that said, we are huge fans of Birmingham, Alabama’s The Dirty Lungs, who will be taking the stage this Thursday at JJ’s Bohemia along side Tony Wayne and the Chain, another great band which features members of Fastboys/Giant Tiger/Black Painter.

We spoke with Lungs’ frontman Carson Mitchell this weekend who informed us the band has dropped from a 5-piece, to a band of 4. “Our sound has morphed a bit, a lot heavier on the Garage/Surf influence, a little more aggressive as well.” We can’t wait! Check out why this is a must-see band. The video below for ‘Your Wrong’ was recorded as a 5-piece and was a South Rail video of the week earlier this year, but it truly shows one of this band’s strong points: a great live sound! Gold Leaves: Download 2 tracks from ‘The Ornament’

Hardly Art, the same label to be bring us Jacuzzi Boys’ latest LP, is now accepting pre-orders for an album that is so far sounding AMAZING! And based on the 2 tracks we’ve heard, which are available for download below, you’ll see what we mean. The band is Gold Leaves and their debut LP, ‘The Ornament,’ drops August 16.  But this new band is more of a project that has been years in the making, put together by Grant Oslen (Arthur & Yu), and featuring guest appearances such as Thao Nguyen (Thao & the Get Down Stay Down, Thao & Mirah), Amy Blaschke (Night Canopy), and The Moondoggies!

PALEO: ‘Holly Would’

Paleo is just one of many artists we’ve been diggin’-on lately from Partisan Records, home-base of Deer Tick, Mountain Main, Warm Ghost, Bobby and more. David Strackany, who records under the name Paleo, is a song-writing machine and is know for cranking out a song-a-day. And he documents most of his song writing experiences which you can view via his online song diary. Paleo’s latest full-length, ‘Fruit Of The Spirit,’ is more of a collaborative effort of friends and was recorded with analogue equipment with Daytrotter‘s sound engineer and founding-member, Patrick Stolley!!!!

Cults: New Video & Rooftop Performance

If you’re a fan of Cults, there has been a lot of stuff to watch this week…

The first official video from Cults debut, self-titled LP premiered via Boing Boing for their single ‘Go Outside,’ …and SPIN magazine just released a 7-song rooftop performance when the band stopped by their NYC headquarters which can be streamed from their website (see link below).

JEFF the Brotherhood‘s latest LP ‘We Are The Champions’ has been on our turntable’s high rotation for the past few weeks… actually, anything that comes from their label Infinity Cat Records has been playing here non-stop at The South Rail this summer… Natural Child, Peach Killi Pop, PUJOL and Heavy Cream, just to name a few…

From ‘We Are the Champions’ comes the song ‘Health & Strength.’ The original take you are about to hear was from a recently pressed limited edition tour-ownly-sold 7″ that is now sold out. The album version of the song features sitars and violins. The track recently premiered via Stereogum… and now is available for free download:
