The first time we heard about the formation of this newest “super-group,” Mister Heavenly, was from Honus Honus of Man Man’s personal Twitter… and for the past year, we’ve waited.
Well, the wait is almost over… Mister Heavenly, consisting of Man Man‘s Honus Honus, Islands‘ (and The Unicorns) Nick Diamonds, and Modest Mouse‘s Joe Plummer, is giving us a FREE taste of 2 their tracks, ‘Mister Heavenly’ & ‘Pineapple Girl’ which will soon be released as a 7″ via Sub Pop records followed by their upcoming debut full-length, which will be out later on in 2011. We recently had the privilege to see The David Mayfield Parade at Rhythm & Brews last week and got to celebrate David’s birthday at the end of the show with a few cocktails… If you haven’t heard of David Mayfield or his new band The David Mayfield Parade, you surely HAVE heard of David Mayfield…. here’s why:
David’s songwriting abilities along with his many musical talents have evolved into what is now known as the David Mayfield Parade. This highly charged ensemble has brought the true roots of early rock-n-roll and singer/ songwriter-country music back… BUT of course, David Mayfield has added a little flair to make it his own. The live performance is an explosion of Carl Perkins meets bluegrass hoedown….forcing the audience to enjoy every second of it.
Check out the David Mayfield Parade while they are on tour supporting their newly released album HERE
And while your at it, pick up the self-titled album HERE… or download the track ‘Blue Skies Again’ for the price of your email address:
We put a lot of time into this year’s top albums of 2010 list… so much that we’re already a few weeks into 2011! Last year, there were some albums that became so near and dear after posting, that it breaks our hearts we didn’t list then on our top 10 of 2009 (Including Bear In Heaven’s ‘Beast Rest Forth Mouth’ and Devendra Banhart’s ‘What Will We Be’)… Sooo, without further adieu, here is The South Rail Music Blog’s Top 15 Albums of 2010…
Please note: If you’re interested in purchasing any of these albums, feel free to use the links we have provided for purchase. Click any ‘Buy from the band’ link & it will take you directly to each artist’s (or record label’s) personal webstore, insuring your paying who counts!!!
Best Coast and Jeff the Brotherhood have teamed up to release a 7″ split via Volcam this week. Each side of the split’s artwork was personally designed by each band and printed on translucent pink vinyl. Check out the tracks below… Side A features Best Coast’s ‘Sunny Adventure’ and Side B features Jeff the Brotherhood’s ‘Bummer.’
If you still can get a hold of one, you can try either HERE at Volcom’s Vinyl Club, or via Jeff the Brotherhood’s label Infinity Cat HERE
Also, Best Coast’s new video for their 2010’s ‘Crazy For You’ title track debuted this week via I Can Has a Cheezburger… Kind of unusual to premiere on a humorous cat blog, but once you see the video you’ll understand:
We’ve been looking forward to hearing this band since early last year when we first heard word of this super-group writing and recording in Nashville for what is now their debut album. At the time, the band — Deer Tick‘s John McCauley, Dawes‘ Taylor Goldsmith and Delta Spirit‘s Matt Vasquez — were going by the name MGandV… Now, almost a year later, we shall know them as Middle Brother.
The band has only played a rare handful of shows in 2010, but have now put together a small March run of dates in order to support their debut self-titled release, hitting shelves via Partisan Records March 1st… The album is a collaborative effort from all 3 lead singer/songwritters and includes appearances from Jason Isabell and South Rail favorite Jonny Corndawg.
Check out a couple tracks from the album… Stream the track ‘Me Me Me’…
…watch the performance of the first track off the album, ‘Daydreaming,’ live at SXSW (the band’s first live performance)…

One of our favorite singles to come out this fall has been Get Some, the first track from Lykke Li and her forthcoming sophomore album Wounded Rhymes, which is due out March 1st via LL Recordings…. And that single just got a remixed today by Beck.
We can’t say that we’re the biggest fans of remixes lately, but Beck’s spin on this is defiantly worthy and worth your time, giving the already killer song a great new vibe. Check it out below for yourself… Also, compare/contrast with the original and if you dig what-cha hear, download both tracks below:

In 2008, Kevin Morby from Woods and Cassie Ramone from Vivian Girls moved into an apartment together in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. A year later, during breaks between both of their bands’ touring, The Babies were born… Now over a year from the bands’ live debut (and a couple of 7″s along the way) their debut self-titled album is being released via Shrimper records Feb 8th, 2011.
They recorded the album with Jarvis Taveniere at Rear House Studios, which doubles as Kevin’s home; his vocals were done in his own bedroom. (Jarvis, Kevin’s bandmate in Woods, has also recorded Real Estate, Vivian Girls, and Woods.) The debut album follows 7″ singles on Make a Mess Records & Wild World.
The first single is a fun and dirty track called Run Me Over. And if it’s any indication of what’s to be heard from the additional 10 tracks (see tracklisting below), we can’t wait. Hear for yourself below and check out The Babies on tour in early 2011.

4. Voice Like Thunder
5. Meet Me In The City
6. Personality
7. Breakin’ The Law
8. Sick Kid

Those Darlins have announced their forthcoming release of their second album Screws Get Loose released via the Oh Wow Dang label on March 29, 2011.
The band re-enlisted producer Jeff Curtin (Small Black) and headed down to Atlanta, GA to record Screws Get Loose with engineer Ed Rawls at his Living Room Studio (Black Lips, Jacuzzi Boys). While the band’s country punk nature is still evident, the Southern roots that shine through are more in line with the dirty South garage rock blasting out of Memphis, Atlanta and Nashville in recent years. Haunting and hook-laden rock numbers tussle with the confessional weight of other songs. Stylistically, the band has created a range of sounds as far ranging as Spector-like summery girl pop to a fully realized stoner jam.
The band will be previewing the songs off Screws Get Loose at the top of the year with multiple tour dates. See full tour listings here… and pick up their latest release, the ‘Night Jogger’ 7″ while your at it.
