Athens, Georgia’s Cicada Rhythm is one of our latest discoveries who have been in high rotation in our headphones… And once digging up some info on the band to write this very article, we were pleasantly suprised to see the band will be playing a Chattanooga gig this Friday, February 19th at The Camp House, opening for HoneyHoney!
Cicada Rhythm are currently touring in-support of their debut self-tilted LP that dropped in October by Athen’s Normaltown Records– See full dates HERE
The record is a smooth and comforting collection of songs from beginning to end with a similar spirit to Deer Tick’s War Elephant. Stream the full LP below in addition to videos of a few keys tracks. Tickets and details for Friday’s show are available HERE!
Pick-up your copy of the new LP at the show or HERE:
On the topic of favorite records… Shakey Graves’ most recent LP, “And The War Came,” is one of our most cherished albums from 2014… and for the next 72 hours, that LP, along with the entire Shakey Graves discography, is available for FREE via the band’s Bandcamp account! (Well, free, or “Name Your Price” if you want to throw Shakey some bones)
That’s right!…. FREE!…. 72 HOURS!
Today, February 9th, is officially Shakey Graves Day. By 3pm EST this Friday (2/12), all of these albums will disappear until this time next year…
What are you waiting for? Stream and download below and HERE!
Mail the Horse is hands down one of our favorite discoveries of 2015! And their latest LP, “Planet Gates,” is easily one of our top 10 records of last year!
Once we dug around to find out more about this 5-piece, we were surprised to learn the band, with music laced with so much Southern influence, actually hails from Brooklyn, NY… In the same vain when we first discovered Clear Plastic Mask back in 2012 (prior to their Nashville move).
Check out the official video for “Flowers Keys Gasoline” and stream the full “Planet Gates” record below.
Our pals from The Woodshop recently introduced us to the Oxford, Mississippi band Reels, who will be playing at Chattanooga’s newest music series, The Woodshop Presents, on February 19th at 5500 St. Elmo Ave.
Reels are on tour in-support of their debut 3-song EP, which dropped in November for FREE!
Stream and download the EP below… or HERE… and follow both Reels and The Woodshop Presents for details of the February 19th show.
Back in December, we had the pleasure of ending our year in Nashville with Nikki Lane at her very last show of 2015… And there is nothing we like more than going to a show of one of our favorite artists and walking away a fan of the opening act!
In this case, it was Dallas, Texas’ Jonathan Tyler who kicked off the evening at City Winery with high energy and crafty songwriting! He was even joined by Nikki Lane with the song “To Love Is To Fly,” a single from his latest LP, “Holy Smokes.”
The record is Tyler’s second full-length, but first via Thirty Tigers, and first without his and his band’s original name “Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights,” which they had to change for legal reasons.
Catch this road warrior in just about every damn city in the U.S. in 2016 – See full tour dates HERE – and stream a few tracks from “Holy Smokes” below including a mini documentary of the the band on the road below.
“Holy Smokes” is available NOW… Pick up your copyHERE
About a week ago, Third Man Records released the A-side of the label’s most recent addition to their roster, Nashville’s Sun Seeker.
Not only is this a first-taste to one heck of single, but it’s the band’s debut physical release as well! Which is pretty dang impressive in our books – The band had a Bandcamp page which had some additional tracks from a digital EP, but those have since been removed.

UPDATE: Feb. 10, 2016:

Once we had our first listen of Indianola’s debut single “Another Thing Coming” we were instantly hooked from that first riff… then we found out Michael Trent of Shovels & Rope was the producer of that track and to an upcoming LP or EP project… Well, that future album has ranked as one of our highly anticipated releases of 2016!
Even though we don’t know much of what Indianola has up its sleeves for this year other than a handful of shows, we can tell you that frontman Owen Beverly is from Charleston, NC (once from Indianola, MS) and what we have heard has high potential.
Dig into the single “Another Thing Coming” below as well as little teasers of tracks “Broke Up,” “Fever Dream,” and “Heartstrings.” – Keep a lookout of big things this year coming from Indianola! Follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and details from their official website HERE:
At the same time as we publish this post on a late Friday evening here in Chattanooga, Those Darlins hit the stage in our sister city, Nashville, at The Basement East… Sadly, this will be their very last show.
If you’ve been a long-time follower of The South Rail, then you know how we’ve loved us some Those Darlins since their very beginning… And if you haven’t heard by now, the band has been touring this January… performing their final shows on their “Farewell” tour – The tour that is ending this evening.
Experiencing the “end” of one of our favorite bands, during their last Chattanooga date at JJ’s Bohemia, well… that grabbed our music-loving soul. We know each member will be continuing with separate music and/or art projects in the near future, and we wish them all the best of luck. We can’t wait to see what 2016 has to offer… but knowing that “the band” is leaving on “indefinite hiatus”… “the band” that grew up at the same time as this blog… well, it made us hungry to do this “thing”… To bring The South Rail back once again!
We know, we know… This blog has slowly died out since 2014, and has been very off & on near it’s “end”… But a band who’s music inspired us to “South Rail” to begin with, well… they have inspired us yet again…
Established in 2009, we are ready to give this another shot. Slowed down by a major hack that destroyed our website (luckily had a back-up of every artical). Now, with a minor refresh to support mobile content, we are back.
Best of luck again to Those Darlins! I’m sure you’re killing it right now at tonight’s sold out show! We can’t wait to see what you have up your sleeves in 2016 and the future! Thank you for years of great times and tunes!
Here’s a round-up of all our favorite Those Darlins tracks… Dig in and enjoy – TSR
