Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s Joshua Gragg (from Lemont and American Minor) has returned to his Blackband Coal Company project with a new 5-song EP, ‘White Gold,’ available digitally for FREE !
The last time we heard anything new from BBCC was back in 2010 where Gragg slowly released singles digitally on Soundcloud, very similar to the way his other band Lemont did last year (click here for details). This time Blackband returns not only with an EP filled with killer gritty self-recorded/written material, but with videos that accompany each track glorifying it’s lo-fi pop with vintage 8mm footage (for the exception of the 1st track ‘Wasted Youth’).
So sit back and either download, stream or watch these 5 new tracks!.. or all of the above. For fans of The Love Language, Dr. Dog — DIG IN:

It’s that time of the year again here at The South Rail and we never like kicking off a new year without recognizing the past year in great music. This is our 4th addition of top albums of a year – We started with a top 10 in 2009, moved up to a top 15, and then to honor 2011, a top 20… So to keep our inconsistent rankings consistent, we give to you our TOP 13 ALBUMS OF 2012!
And as always, next to each album title is a “Purchase from the band or label” link, which takes you directly to the best possible way to purchase each album… directly from the band! If the artist doesn’t sell directly, the link will take you to their label. Support the arts, and keep these great musicians’ careers in-check for 2013!
Back in August of last year, we covered a ‘Get To Know’ article on a Little Rock, Arkansas band named The Coasts, featuring a stream their debut self-titled LP. An album that in-fact made it to the Top 10 of our Top 20 albums of 2011… So keeping this in mind, you could imagine the anticipation of new material from this relatively new band.
Just a little over a year later their newest effort, ‘Santa Fe,‘ is delivered, which is a 5-track EP that does not disappoint. On top of that, the boys are donating a part of their proceeds to the Hope For Haiti’s Children foundation (just like their debut album). The other portion of what they’ll make will go towards funding a tour and vinyl production. As they said themselves “it’s a win win.” We couldn’t agree more.
Stream all of ‘Santa Fe’ below and if you’re digging’ it, pick up a copy HERE… Also check out a live version of track-2 of the EP ‘No One’s Listening,’ great stuff:
And if you missed it last year, stream The Coasts’ debut LP:
HOT DAMN! Nashville has been cranking out nothing but gold lately and Promised Land is definitely one of those newer bands we can thank for that. We’ve only had the chance to catch this 4-piece fronted by Joseph Scala (Denney & the Jets, PUJOL) live once, but with that one short set, we were sold and have been highly anticipating recorded material from them ever since.
Well, that wait is officially over… Stream the new 5-song EP ‘Stoned Eagle’ below and download a copy for $6 HERE. No word on a physical release, but we’re sure it’s well on its way. We’ll keep ya posted:
Ranger is a new band who have recently caught our attention, hailing from New Albany, IN, home of South Rail favorites Houndmouth and stone-throwing distance from Louisville, KY. Their debut EP, ‘Heritage,’ dropped earlier this Fall and other than that, we don’t know much about this new 4-piece… But once you are seconds into key tracks like ‘Heritage,’ ‘Daily Ballad’ and ‘Voyager,’ you’ll see where we’re coming from.
Stream the ‘Heritage’ EP below and download your FREE copy HERE:
Reportedly recorded in Nashville a couple weeks ago in a practice space when Alabama Shakes, Fly Golden Eagle and Clear Plastic Masks got together for a little session. No word on any other details or tracks to come from those sessions, but we’ll keep ya posted.
Follow Thunderbitch’s Facebook page HERE and keep an eye out, we’re sure this isn’t the last to surface from this new band or those sessions!. Enjoy:
The other week we gave you a first taste of The Kingston Springs‘ self-titled debut full-length, with the single ‘Lowest of Animals.’ Now, stream the full LP, available in its entirity below. The album dropped digitally last week and will be out in physical for here shortly… If you ask us, this sucker is definitely a contender for our top albums of 2012! We can’t get enough!
If you dig what you hear, order a physical copy HERE or pick one up LIVE tonight in Chattanooga (or a Southern city near you – Full tour list below). The Kingston Springs will be at JJ’s Bohemia tonight (10/9) with locals Eight Knives. Doors/9, show/10… and come early & stay late with $1 beers all night! See you there!
Seth Pettersen & The Undertow are a band from Los Angeles, CA, who just dropped their new LP, ‘Natural Machine,’ in physical form via Burger Records, pressed and numbered on 250 cassettes… We say “physical” because the album was self released back in July as a Bandcamp MP3 download only.
At first glance, the album’s cover features frontman Seth holding a surfboard backdropped with palm trees, taking us into the mindset of surf and Summer. Then at first listen, we weren’t deceived, receiving that Calafornia Summer vibe we expected with a nice mix of phychedilics and classic folk rock. Great album, not just for the beach or Summer, but for anytime.
Now, give the LP some justice and press this sucker on wax!.. Stream the full ‘Natural Machine’ album below and if you dig what-cha hear (and you don’t mind cassettes), pick-up the new tape HERE… Oh, and download the single ‘Breaking Points’ for FREE (below the LP steam):
